The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs reported that three (3) Filipino seafarers of a Belgian vessel were released by Somali pirates last Saturday, June 27.
Over the weekend, the Belgian government issued statements that the MV Pompei and its crew, which was captured last April, were freed by their Somali captors. Our embassy in Nairobi (Kenya) confirmed the Belgian reports.
Embassy officials also said that the three freed Filipinos were all in good health. As of this writing, the DFA was still awaiting information about their repatriation.
The DFA said there are still 44 Filipinos across four vessels held captive by Somali pirates.
