DNV accredits Compass for Intertanko – TOTS

Training center Compass has been accredited by Det Norske Veritas (DNV) to offer courses for the Intertanko—Tanker Officer’s Training Standard (TOTS).

DNV awarded the accreditation in a simple ceremony at the Manila Yacht Club recently, witnessed by its friends from the media.

With the accreditation, Compass is now a fully DNV-certified Intertanko-TOTS training center, an added achievement to its young corporate existence yet industry leading initiative.

According to Compass president Dakila Villanueva, the accreditation only stresses his company’s role in the maritime industry boosting its bid to become a globally recognized training institution.

“Passing the DNV-TOTS accreditation is a great milestone for Compass,” Villanueva said. “This accomplishment is the result of our commitment and concerted efforts and shall motivate us to strive even further.”

Less than six months after Compass successfully passed two consecutive audits from two different bodies, the company was able to pass it again for the third time with flying colors. From July 13-15, 2010, in what was a significant step forward to the attainment of company’s vision of becoming a globally-recognized and a leading valued partner of the maritime industry, Compass was successfully audited and awarded a DNV-Certified TOTS (Tanker Officers Training Standards by INTERTANKO, 2008) Training Center status. The audit was spearheaded by Capt. Sanjeev Soni of DNV-Singapore and this accreditation makes Compass the first certified TOTS training center in the entire South East Asia.

DNV, on the other hand, is a global provider of risk management services, helping customers to safely and responsibly improve their business performance. DNV is the world’s only classification society to offer a full suite services supporting ship owners and managers in competency benchmarking.

Prior to the successful audit for the Intertanko –TOTS certification, Compass was also earlier awarded the ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management Systems in February 2010 likewise by DNV. In March 2010, after a successful audit of its training facilities and training modules, the Maritime Training Council in the Philippines also qualified Compass as a maritime training center offering the mandatory STCW 78 courses.

Now, Compass is trying very hard to get another certification from DNV-Singapore to run TOTS simulator courses to enable the company to provide unparalleled training service for tanker operators by providing the standard and minimum requirements for tanker training courses for their crews through the STCW courses.

Meanwhile, TOTS offers training and verification of core competency, providing the industry with a standard that ensures tanker officer competence through onboard and shore training, evaluating knowledge gained as a result of time in rank and time with company.

Among the courses it offers include:

• Module 4A, Chemical Tanker Simulator Training
• Module 4B, Chemical Tanker Simulator Verification
• Module 4C, Product Tanker Simulator Training
• Module 4D, Product Tanker Simulator Verification
• Module 4E, Crude Oil Tanker Simulator Training
